Veronica Reeves lowered the orb to the bottom of the shaft, and now the orb is about to fulfill its ancient purpose — the Rocktopi will not be taken alive. Connell is trying to escape the tunnels. O’Doyle and Lybrand are farther up the Linus Highway. They are badly wounded, and just stripped Angus Kool of his Koolsuit so that Lybrand could continue on. Meanwhile, Sonny McGuiness watches Funeral Mountain from a safe distance. But he is about to learn there is no such thing.

Patrick O’Doyle is badly wounded, but Bertha Lybrand is in even worse shape. Her KoolSuit has failed and she’s dying of heat exposure. They just came across Angus Kool, who is tied up with copper wire after being tortured by Kayla Meyers. He is helpless, at O’Doyle’s mercy. Kayla is farther down in the tunnels, in the ancient tracking down Connell Kirkland, who is carrying her bullet in his leg. Kayla needs to finish him off before she tracks down Veronica Reeves. Veronica is inside the ship, about to lower a bomb deep into the earth … a bomb that will kill everyone.

Connell Kirkland, Bertha Lybrand, and Patrick O’Doyle made it through the ancient ship, but on the far side they spotted a heavily armed Kayla Meyers, and she isn’t there to rescue them. Kayla’s hunt for camp survivors is about to come to a grizzly end. Veronica Reeves didn’t make it through the ship. She thinks she’s figured out a way to make the rockopi pay for killing her father. She’s going to wipe them out, all of them, and doesn’t care who else dies in the process.

Angus is almost out of the hellhole that is the Dense Mass Cavern and the maze of tunnels. Finally, Angus and Kayla will meet face-to-face. Veronica, Connell, Bertha, and O’Doyle are still in the tunnels, in an underground river being washed through the ancient wreck of the rocktopi ship. The horde of monsters is still outside the Dense Mass Cavern, held at bay only by ancient superstitions, but how long can that last?

Happy Valentine’s Day Junkies! We’re doing our best to stay on-brand and still celebrate love. You know, like the love of a great 80s slasher flick!

Scott & A sat down this week to watch this 1981 horror … classic. It comes out pretty early on in the 80s slasher heyday, and it’s full of all that goodness: goofy plot devices, loads of teenagers sinnin’, plenty of gore and lots and lots of violence. All with great set design, some solid bloody prop work, and the world’s best dog actor.

If you’ve read my novel NOCTURNAL, you may recall the character Pookie Chang’s idea for a cop show. Like HILL STREET BLUES, BLUE BLOODS, NYPD BLUE, ROOKIE BLUE, SHADES OF BLUE, etc., Pooks decided his show should have that color as a titular part of the title. Hence, BLUE BALLS.

In NOCTURNAL, Pookie might be considered the sidekick to Bryan Clauser’s lead character. In BLUE BALLS, which Pookie writes as a spec script to sell to network TV, he is the heroic lead, and Bryan is the bumbling also-ran. Pookie’s buddy cop script plays on many cop-show tropes.

For the past three SiglerFests, we’ve live-recorded a portion of Pookie’s script for Season One, Episode 2, titled “Dolla Dolla Bills, Y’All.” Attendees get to read most of the parts. My plan was to release them as individual episodes leading up to SiglerFest2k18, but I screwed up last year’s recording (I paused it at one point, then forgot to continue it), and for the life of me I can’t find the SiglerFest2k16 recording.

So, my pal Stephen King (no, not that Stephen King, and yes, that is his name) gathered up some of his actor pals and we recorded the entire pilot script as a live table read. Many props to Iceberg, our editor, for putting this together.

On this episode, Scott and A revisit Raiders of the Lost Ark. (Spoiler alert: it totally holds up.)

We were lucky enough to see the Rooftop Cinema showing, which is  rooftop, outdoor viewing with cocktails. It was a really fun addition to the overall experience! If there’s something like this in your town, don’t miss the chance to go!

This episode doesn’t have our normal “timestamp discussion” of the movie because of the aforementioned venue change. But since it’s such a classic, I bet that’s just fine.

Mattie, Bishop, Admiral Xander, and the others have crash-landed their modified shuttle in the Dragon’s landing bay. The Dragon’s ship-killing cannon will be in firing range of the Xolotl in five minutes – if Em and her friends are to save all of their people from certain death, they must detonate a nuke from inside of the enemy vessel. All of the action of the Generations Trilogy comes down to this final, critical moment. Will Mattie save her people?

StorySmack is a podcast about storytelling, but I must admit we talk quite a bit about movies. Today, however, we’re going to talk about a movie maker. In fact, the most Oscar-nominated movie maker on Earth. Actor? Director? Nope — orchestrator and conductor John Williams.

I know you love John Williams’ work. I know I love the Star Wars score, and the Indiana Jones score. Those are both his. But so many others you know and love are also John Williams’ work. You’ll be amazed at how much of the score to your own life is lifted from work he’s done.

This movie stars three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day Lewis and Madeleine Stowe, but the show is completely stolen by Wes Studi. Studi’s portrayal of Magwa is one of my favorite roles of all-time — positively bad-ass. And this flick? Yeah, it’s got lots (and lots) of violence.

The thing is … ALIENS is Scott’s favorite, but it’s also a hugely important and influential movie in general. Sigourney Weaver is luminescent in every sense of the word, all the while being a difficult, ornery character, in unfathomable circumstances. It’s a performance of a lifetime, and it’s only one part of the movie. If you have never seen it, do watch it before listening.

This week we’re taking a break from movie breakdowns as we recover from our European jet lag.

Everyone’s seen plenty of courtroom dramas, cop stories, and forensic investigation on television and in the movies. So much that our sense of justice and the law is surely informed by what we’ve seen on the screen. And what’s on the screen isn’t always real-world accurate, surrendering dry legal wrangling for entertaining fiction.

Scott and A breakdown the degrees of murder as they’re written in California so we can see where reality and fiction diverge. If you’re a storyteller or just a big fan of true-crime stories, these are things you should know. We’re here to help!

Nonetheless, this is a movie that holds up better than most. It’s a lovely, fragile, hard-as-nails movie, full of anger and grace and humanity and morality. If you’ve followed the ‘cast for the past few years, you may have heard ARealGirl or our audio producer Iceberg talk about how I curse up a storm of frustration while in the recording booth. Recording the audiobook is the final stage of editing for us. When you read things out loud, they often sound different from how they read on a printed page. So you think you’ve written one thing, but when you read it out loud, you realize it’s not at all what you meant.

While it’s a fantastic method for streamlining your writing and making sure verbose writer vocabs don’t get in the way of the story, it often makes me mad as hell. After discovering food and water in the Garden, it should have been a happy occasion for Em and the kids. But then, tragedy befell Latu, and Em was the first to see what happens when people are left alone with hungry pigs. So this won’t happen to anyone else, Em and Bishop are in a race against time to get the rest of their people and bring them safely to the Garden.

Em and the others were shocked to run into a pig. Desperate for food, the kids made the instant decision to kill it, but it escaped, biting Latu in the shoulder and badly wounding her as it did. Against Em’s orders, Bishop ran after the pig, leaving Em no choice but to follow him. They tracked the wounded animal to a room with something the kids have never seen before — plants, a dense thicket wall. The pig’s blood trail leads through a shallow tunnel gnawed through that thicket, so that’s where Bishop and Em must go.

Em has led the Birthday Children into a strange, broken-down area filled with coffins of a different kind — thin, white, heavily beat-up, and empty. Em, O’Malley, and Latu are looking in one set of rooms, Bishop and El-Saffani in the others. What they all find next will change their existence forever.

Em and her friends met Bishop and his crew. A brief, peaceful struggle for control of the Birthday Children left Em with the spear, a symbol of power. She now leads 23 other people through the halls, looking for a way out. They are also looking for food, and, more importantly, water. If they don’t find sustenance soon, Em knows her people will die.

As the group struggles to deal with the fallout from Yong’s attack, they hear the first evidence that they are not alone — the sound of heavy footsteps marching in time. That sound is drawing closer. Will Em and the others finally find out why they’ve been put in this strange dungeon?

In the last episode, Yong grew tired of wandering through hallways, finding nothing, and he challenged Em’s leadership. He attacked Spingate, then rushed at Em — and when he did, Em’s knife slid deep into his belly. In this episode, we learn of Yong’s fate: will he survive, or will he become just another pile of dust-covered bones?

Em, Spingate, O’Malley, Belo, Yong, and Aramovsky are trying to come to grips with their desperate situation. They woke up in coffins. Six other coffins in the same room contained shriveled corpses. Why? Who were those dead kids? What is this strange, dust-covered room? In the last episode, they finally managed to open the heavy stone doors that kept them trapped inside. Now, for the first time, they leave their room and set out to find answers.

Em and Spingate have escaped their coffins, and managed to open two more — one holds the sleeping K. O’Malley, while the other contains the dead body of B. Brewer. Eight more coffins remain unopened. In this episode, Em and Spingate find out how many coffins contain potential friends and allies, and how many contain shriveled corpses.

M. Savage woke to a nightmare — trapped in a coffin, alone, unable to remember anything about her past. She fought her way free only to find herself in a room full of coffins. One of those coffins contained another girl, trapped just like her. In this episode, the blood-streaked pair try to make some sense of their situation.

Of all the questions Scott gets asked over and over, at every con, every book reading, and every day by DM or Facebook message or email … among the most frequent is “What advice do you have for me? How do I become a writer?”

In this video, he tells you how he did it. Anyone can write a novel. Didn’t go to college to learn literature, etc? Doesn’t matter. Your idea is just as valid as anyone else’s. Scott will tell you how to write your first novel.

Author of Red Rising trilogy talks writing process, screenplays, Hollywood, and being an "overnight success"

Pierce Brown’s first novel RED RISING was a smash hit. While touring to support GOLDEN SON, the second book in that series, Pierce visited the Empty Set studios to talk about his books, his career, and to answer questions sent in by his fans.

Scott already reviewed the book, but with Pierce in town, we wanted to jibber-jab to entertain your faces. If you’re a creative type, this is a great interview for ya. Even for someone who hits it out of the park with a “first novel,” there is much work to be done if you want to succeed.

We’re coming at you a bit early in the week for the FridayFix™, but we’ve got important things and stuff to discuss!

In 2015, our convention schedule will switch up a bit, as we will be participating in Phoenix ComicCon this year! They have a great literary track, and after meeting Lee Whiteside at San Diego Comic Con last year, we’re going to check it out. And we’re pretty excited.

That means we will not be at Balticon this year. Those cons are a week apart, and it only makes sense time-wise and money-wise to do one of them this year. It was hard to give up such a great con as Balticon this year, but in the end it has to be done.

Other cons we’ll be attending are San Diego Comic-ConDragon*Con (where Scott is already confirmed as a guest) and SiglerFest (October 8 – 12, 2015 in Las Vegas. Registration opens soooon!)

It’s the holidays, suckas! And with it comes year’s end, and with that comes our annual rambling-ass Year In Review.

The two gasbag partners in Empty Set Entertainment combined to bring you an hour and twenty minutes of blabby-blab about the books we published, the tours we toured and the anthologies we anthologized — and also the new addition to the fam, our lovely little Dog of Døøm. Did we mention how long this episode is? Listen at your own risk.

And, we did our top-four stories of 2014 as a fancy video. Wanna watch? Just click here.

Here’s the video of Scott “trusting his equipment” from his time in FLA training SWAT teams with Junkie Chris Grall:

It’s the holidays, and that means family and what-not. It also means things popping up out of nowhere like schedule-destroying demons, hell-bent on ruining all yer carefully crafted plans. Yep, happens to us like it happens to everyone else, so how do we handle that?

My lifelong buddy Rob Otto. We were born on the same day, same year, so — obviously — we’re twins!

How about you, Junkies? What kind of things popped up during your holiday season to scuttle your schedules?

Been poking around the Empty Set store this Black Friday?  If you have, and you’re looking for swank GFL t-shirts, you might notice our selections are dwindling.

We’ve had a few emails and comments lately about how there are slim pickings in the store as far as t-shirt sizes go, and I don’t disagree. That said, several folks notice that there are only smalls and mediums of some t-shirts, and think we’re discriminating against folks of a different size.  That’s where I disagree of course.

Take a few moments and listen to this ultra short Friday Fix to see when, if, and how you can get new GFL gear in whatever size you want. Just, maybe, not in time for Christmas.

This is ARealGirl, and we’re back with another round with Evo Terra, founder of Podiobooks.com, and Sheila Dee, author of THE ROOKIE Curriculum Guide. They helped get another show pre-recorded so I’d have time to recover.

How’s my tonsillectomy recovery going? Well … slowly, I guess. Seems I’m doing fine, and I mostly feel okay. That is, until I have to swallow. For any reason. That stinks all the stink. But otherwise things are good. Today I even ate solid food for the first time since last Thursday!

This ‘cast is all about the Empty Set origin story — just how did Scott & A come to work together, anyway? And we throw in the Podiobooks origin story as well: you’ve used it, you know you have, so how did that come to be? It was, as I mentioned last week, awesome and fun to have “SheVo” at Empty Set for the weekend.

Big thanks for those who shared their irrational fears last week! It was super fun to look forward to, and I’m still as perplexed and fascinated as ever at how humans behave.

On this week’s FridayFix we’re lucky to have our good friends Evo Terra and Sheila Dee join us. They came to San Diego for a visit, and sat down to talk irrational fears.

Why, you ask? This was recorded last weekend, and yesterday I had a tonsillectomy. It went well, straightforward with no complications, but back on Saturday night, I didn’t know all of that. I just knew I was scared with some reasonable fears, and some … less so.

So listen first, then cheer me up by telling me about yourirrational fears in the comments section! I promise to check in obsessively in the few hours a day I’m not sleeping a drug fueled sleep after fighting to swallow as little as possible and still stay hydrated.

Also, we discuss chugging mouthwash, puberty, George Burns impressions, Angry Trivial Pursuit™, DEATHRACE 2000 (not 3000), your constitutional right to go topless, anti-boobie laws, giant fucking spiders, and the worst nightmare Scott has ever had.

We polled and we pondered. We discussed at the Office of Doom. And we’ve decided which designs we’re moving forward with, even if not all of them will make it to an actual t-shirt. We’re in a terrific spot: so many good ideas, we’ve got to see art on more than expected!

Right now, we’ll print a new Krakens t-shirt, plus one each of the non-Krakens designs and the non-GFL designs. Which ones? Sorry, you’ll have to listen to the cast. Don’t worry, it’s only ten minutes long! Ten minutes!

Hey Junkies! We’re still at SiglerFest2K14 in Vegas, but wanted to do a quick follow-up now that THE CHAMPION has been shipped and ebook links have been sent!

We get a few standard questions once we’ve shipped a GFL book:

  1. My book hasn’t shown up … have all the pre-orders been shipped?
All pre-orders have shipped, with the last batch going out this past Monday morning.

It takes a maximum of ten business days to arrive to a US destination, but since we deliver them right to the central office, it often takes less.  We sent books on Friday, Saturday and Monday, so *worst case* your book would arrive around October 20th if you’re in the continental US.

  2. How can I get my free ebook because I bought the hardcover?
You should have received an email with the download link on or about September 30th. If you have not, just email info@emptyset.com and we’ll sort you out!
  3. My ebook won’t load onto my smart phone/tablet … what gives?
The ebook file you get is a zip file that contains the .mobi and the .epub versions of the book, so you have whatever format fits your preferred device. Zip files must be downloaded to your computer, unzipped, and then the right file (.mobi or .epub) loaded into your device software. As far as I know, tablets and smart phones can’t unzip files directly.
  4. When is the audiobook going to be out?
Although we talk about it being “out soon” during this ‘cast, it’s actually out now! You can get it on iTunes, Audible or at Amazon! woo HOO!

SCOTT, WHICH WAY MAKE YOU THE MOST $$$
This remains the single most-common question we are asked. The answer is: “do what you’re comfortable with.” We’re here for you, you’re not here for us. However, if you really want to know, we actually make more if you sign up for the trial and download THE CHAMPION as your first audiobook. That’s right, you get the book for free, we get more money. I woke up screaming in the dark.

I woke up alone.

I didn’t know who I was, where I was,
or how I got there.

But I learned. I fought. I survived.

I still don’t know who I was,
but now I know who I am.

And I’m not alone anymore.

Friends, fans, Junkies, lend me your ears. Okay, fine, your eyes, because this is a letter — stop being a smart-ass already, will ya?

I want to tell you something about my next novel, ALIVE, due out Summer of 2015. It’s different. And not different like that one uncle who comes over for Thanksgiving and smells of patchouli oil, I mean different from anything of mine you’ve ever read. I want to prepare your faces. This letter is all of nine paragraphs long, so read it for me. Because you’re swell like that.

ALIVE is the story of a twelve-year-old girl who wakes up to a nightmare. To say her upbringing was “conservative” is an understatement. I can’t explain why, I can’t reveal what that means, but I can say that telling a story from a child’s perspective is something you haven’t seen from me before, not in novel-length.

So, yeah — different. Is this “YA,” what the fancy-pants big-wigs in those tall New York City publishers offices call “young adult?” The narrator is twelve years old, man. So … maybe? You’ll experience the story through her young mind, her limited life experiences and her pre-adolescent frame of reference.

Different, but also, not as different as you might expect. It’s still written by me, and the rotten apple only falls so far from the haunted tree. Our girl is thrown into a boiling vat of awful and has to fight her way out. There is pain, there is terror, there is loss, and — this is a Sigler story, after all — there is blood.

And now, a sooper-secret secret: At New York Comic Con, Oct 10-13 in the Big Apple, something is afoot.

If you attend, and you go to the Del Rey booth, they have a little trinket to promote ALIVE. Go there, get the staff’s attention and then scream the following line in your best overly dramatic, over-the-top, SyFy Original, Shatneresque delivery.

“The spear! The spear!”

Do that. Get something. Squeal with delight.

My friend PG Holyfield died last night.

Oy, that’s a helluva lead, isn’t it? Back in journalism school, they taught me that the lead has to grab the reader’s attention. For that purpose, I think what I wrote above is ideal. I hope I never have to write one like it again. I know that I will. That knowledge sucks.

So a sad day, to say the least. Authorpodcaster, all-around-great-guy PG is no longer with us. If you know of him, I’m sure you’re sad. I know I am. So to defray that sadness, I offer you a remembrance of him that may put a smile on your face.

PG Holyfield

I am not so good with the memory. I can’t remember when I first met PG, but I remember when he introduced me to Tuaca. I am glad he did. While the details of my encounters with him over the years may fade or smudge — or be blown completely out of proportion, because, let’s face it, I’m me — I have Tuaca as this one little anchor to lock in who he was and how much I enjoyed hanging out with him.

As I said, I can’t recall exactly when I first met this man, but he remembered when he first met me. Apparently, it was 2006 in an elevator at Dragon*Con. He remembered it, and recorded his version of the story with a possible embellishment or two (his story is this week’s podcast episode, the link is at the top of this post). Brotha was a storyteller, and you know our kind: why tell the truth when the truth-plus is far more entertaining? So that’s how he met me.

Now I will share how he introduced me to the “taint juice of the Roman legions.”

All right, this isn’t how I met him, it’s my favorite memory of him. He was a kick-ass dude who had this constant expression of delighted surprise on his face, as if everything he saw made him think: “Holy shit, look at this! What’s going on here? I’m not sure, but holy shitthis looks awesome.” Imagine a black lab with an IQ of 140 and opposable thumbs, and you’ve got PG down cold.

I may have this memory completely wrong, but this is how it happened in my head. Word is bond.

Back in 2008 at Balticon, my cousin, Francis Dominick Olivieri, was interviewing Evo Terra for “Let’s Get Pissed With The FDO,” a sporadic podcast that sometimes pops up at conventions like Balticon and Dragon*Con. The gist of the podcast is: Francis asks the guest six questions, Francis and the guest do a shot before every question. Francis usually invents the guest’s “background” on the fly, and asks hard-hitting questions about the guest’s past, motivations, influences, criminal record, history of worshiping Mussolini, the time they were chased by Columbian drug lords after “borrowing” an elephant, that sort of thing.

The goal of the podcast is, of course, to make the guest laugh so hard he/she can’t answer the questions.

Usually this interview is done before a live audience. Usually, the audience BYOBs and shows up bottle in hand, so that they can also partake of the shot-per-question glory. Francis will raise a glass, the guest and the audience will do the same, and salud, down goes Frazier.

The first few questions go by without too much incident. As the interview progresses, however, things — not surprisingly — tend to go off the rails. Which is the point of the whole thing. Alcohol abuse for the sake of community and good times. There have been no stabbings at a “Let’s Get Pissed.” So far, anyway.

On this occasion, there was an audience of about seventy people. All the folding chairs were full, people were lined up around the outside and the back of the room. Everyone, I think, had brought a bottle of some kind. Based on the expressions of the audience, many must have mistakenly drank every time someone asked them a question before the show. As in, “Hey, how’s it going?” To which the audience member would have responded: “Hold on, lemme knock back a knuckle of this Jim Beam before answering.”

So we have a room full of tipsy people. My cousin Francis is wearing a ridiculous orange track suit, because he’s in the Witness Protection Program, and when you’re hiding from the mob that’s what you do: wear a ridiculous orange track suit.

Out in the audience I saw many of the friends I’ve made since I started podcasting back in ’05. I have a core of friends from high school that I love dearly, and one friend from a previous job for whom I would do anything. Outside of those cats and my blood relatives, my entire social circle comes from podcasting and cons. They are fans, or authors, or podcasters, or friends.

PG was all four of those things.

He was in the audience that day. He got there early to get a good seat. He was also schnockered. Apparently he had been asked several questions before the show. Before the room was even half full, you could tell by the look on his face that he was having the best time ever.

PG Holyfield didn’t wait for permission. If there was a good time to be had, he’d just go ahead and get it started so the engine was already warm when the other drivers arrived.

He came in with a boatload of friends. He had a bottle in each hand. One was half-full (fuck you, I’m an optimist, even now, especially now), and the other was unopened. Both bottles were of some amber fluid with the white letters TUACA down the middle. Francis noticed. He asked PG, “What the hell is that TUACA shit? Where’s the goddamn bourbon? Where’s the goddamn beer? God save the fucking queen, PG, but did you bring fucking liqueur to the fucking show?”

Francis is quite eloquent.

PG responded with a grace seldom seen in the world of con-going drunken revelry. Like the aforementioned lab with the 140 IQ, he held up the bottle as if presenting this most awesome dead bird he’d just found, and said, “It’s made in Tuscany.”

Did I mention Francis was (and still is) on the run from the Mob?

Made in Tuscany? Italian? Well, Francis promptly forgot his disdain for all things liqueur and demanded that PG advance to center stage. PG offered the half-full bottle to Francis to sample a little snort, which Francis did. After a swig, Francis announced, “Oh, my God, drinking this is like having a greasy clown in your mouth.”

Note to the reader: I am not sure when, or if, my cousin Francis actually did have a greasy clown in his mouth. I don’t think it’s germane to the story, so how bout we kick that low-brow humor of yours up a few notches and back into the rarified air that PG deserves? Thank you.

Then Francis said, “Next time we do this show, I should make the guest drink this swill.”

To which PG promptly offered the unopened bottle and said, “why wait?”

Francis was quite excited at this spontaneous burst of generosity, and accepted PG’s gift of 750 milliliters of 35% alcohol (by volume) of vanilla citrus liqueur. He announced to the audience that PG was the new corporate sponsor of “Let’s Get Pissed.” PG smiled, waved, sat back down with that look on his face (you know the one, I told you about it, the what the hell is happening here holy shit this looks awesome), and proceeded to “answer” some questions that I didn’t hear anyone ask him.

Fast-forward 45 minutes. The bottle is pretty much demolished. Evo is doing his best to give a straight-faced answer to accusations regarding his claim to be one of Madonna’s adopted children, and was he the “other man” involved in the collapse of the Jennifer Anniston / Brad Pitt wedding? Francis is screaming that question, and demanding that when he asks the audience “hey, how you doin'” the audience respond with “hey, pretty good, how youdoin’?” PG is having a conversation with five people and has completely forgotten about Francis and the show and everything else. A room full of people who have never heard of Tuaca now associate it with fun, friends, general insanity and PG Holyfield.

So began a tradition that has continued through the years. Tuaca is the defacto drink of “Let’s Get Pissed With the FDO.” According to Francis, it is brewed from the taint juice of the Roman legions. It has to be good for you, because “nothing bad ever came from Tuscany.” We’ve consumed cases of the stuff. It’s also the shot de jour when I am on book tour.

Every single time I’ve had a glass, I think of PG Holyfield. And now every single time I have a glass, I will think of PG, and also think of how I can never have a glass with him again.

That was the fun stuff. Now for the not-so-fun stuff.

The time between when he found out about his prognosis and his passing last night was about three weeks. It had to be a hammer-blow of reality: a doctor telling you that your number is up, nothing can be done, and your time left among your loved ones is measured not in years, not even in months, but in days. I can’t even get my house organized in three weeks — imagine having to scramble to arrange what you can for your family, knowing that the sand in the hourglass has almost sputtered through the narrow neck.

While no amount of time is ever “enough” when a doctor tells you the end is coming, I’m pretty sure that three weeks is at the far range of “not nearly enough.” I hope that his final few days were spent with family, and that he found some solace in knowing that he was loved.

The passing of a friend always reminds me of my mortality. PG is gone, and after an indeterminate time, I am to follow. There is no way around that, no Matrix-style bullet-dodging, no power-up, no code for an extra life or three. You can curse at death all you like: in the end, death wins.

Sometimes death is a real asshole about it. Sometimes all you get is three weeks. You get to know that — like PG did — as that time comes to a close, you won’t really understand what’s going on, you won’t be aware of your surroundings, so your days of being you are even less than three weeks. That’s how PG’s life ended.

In our American healthcare system, his sudden end wasn’t sudden enough that his family didn’t rack up significant hospital bills as they strove to make his final days as nice as they could be. And, of course, the funeral expenses are a kick in the nuts. PG left behind young daughters. If you’ve got a couple of bucks to pitch in for the memory of a lovely man, it would help his family out a great deal. Click here if you can donate.

In a weird way, PG lives on through his podcasts. Podcasts are this little thing a bunch of us did back in the day. We record our voices, polish up the recording on our computers, then post the audio for the world to enjoy. Once those files are out there, in them clouds, they are there forever. Somewhere, on many servers, ripped and copied and downloaded and stored and reposted and shared, PG’s voice lives on forever. He’s gone, but you have the privilege of letting him read you his story. The podiobook “Murder at Avedon Hill” is available for free at Podiobooks.com. Give it a listen. If you dig it, make a donation at that same site. All donations for his book are going to his family.

My friend PG Holyfield died last night. I will miss him.

Happy Friday everybody!

Earlier this month there was a scavenger hunt on the internet that had nothing to do with us — until it did.

GISHWHES stands for (The) Greatest International Scavenger Hunt (the) World Has Ever Seen, and the 2014 list of things to scavenge included this:

“VIDEO: A NYT best-selling author or Tony-award winning actor or actress doing a dramatic reading of a section of this: http://apps.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/hdbk/right_of_way.htm”

Although Scott was rudely ignored during this year’s Tony Awards for the riveting portrayal of Riff in that revival of West Side Story that never happened … he did still fit the bill.

Although we received many requests, we were only able to fit in about a dozen.  Here’s the first result, with more to come as the week goes on.

Please to enjoy.

As Scott is busy furiously packing up Empty Set Studios North, we stole a few moments to record another edition of Inside Empty Set, where we talk about things pertinent to the business side of our business.

This one’s all about convention season: which ones we’ll be attending and why. Also some dissection of Scott’s past strategy vs. our current plan.

This year we’ll attend: Balticon, San Diego Comic Con, Dragon*Con, SiglerFest & ReadCon in Greeley, CO.

Want to hear us talk about something in particular in future episodes of Inside Empty Set? Please drop us a line, or leave a note in the comments.

We’re back with another edition of Inside Empty Set, where we talk about things pertinent to the business side of our business.

Big news today: Sigler is moving to San Diego! That’s right, the Future Dark Øverlord is moving to America’s Finest City, and Empty Set Entertainment will coalesce into one shiny office!

This audio was recorded the day before we found new office space, so there’s still some “maybe” in the discussion. As of today, the ink is dry and the move is set. Listen to hear all the things that contributed to this move.

By the time San Diego ComicCon rolls around in July, we’ll be a humming along in the new space like a well-oiled machine.

This is a terrific, full-cast, live reading of “Chuckles Mulrooney, Attorney for the Damned.” It was recording at the New Media Expo in Las Vegas in January 2014, and was engineered and mastered by Bryan Lincoln. Renee Chambliss did the cajoling and organizing on behalf of NMX to select the right story, and they assembled the perfect cast to bring it to life! Big thanks to both, and we hope you enjoy it!

The Killer Cast:
Narrator – Renee Chambliss
Victor – Johnny Feisty
Morty – Scott Sigler

Satan – Rish Outfield
Chuckles – Big Anklevich
Mephistopheles – Marshal Latham
Sound effects by Bryan Lincoln

Big thanks to Bryan Lincoln for the wonderful story audio. This sounds so good and is proof of a rich, wonderful environment alive and well in podcast fiction. As I mention in the intro, there were several live readings during the conference, all delightful.

The anthology GAMES CREATURES PLAY is out today, April 1 — Sigler Ascension Day! To celebrate the release of this girthy tome, Scott interviews the book’s editors: Charlaine Harris and Toni L.P. Kelner.

Together, this duo has edited seven anthologies. Toni is an Agatha Award-winning mystery author, and Charlaine is perhaps best known as the author of the Sookie Stackhouse series, upon which the HBO show TRUE BLOOD is based.

The trio of authors discuss the GAMES anthology, as well as the challenges involved in getting genre authors — who sometimes have animosity toward athletics and the sports culture — to combine for the great tales included in this collection. Toni and Charlaine also share some of their experiences on growing up well outside the sports culture, and coming to appreciate athletics in their own ways.

ABOUT GAMES CREATURES PLAY:
A heavyweight-champ lineup of genre authors kick out tales of paranormal-soaked sports. Click on the cover at left to read more. Scott story in this tome is “Hunter Hunterson & The Case of the Haunted Safeway,” an all-new tale about America’s #1 monster-stompin’ clan.

ABOUT SIGLER ASCENSION DAY:
On April 1, 2007, Scott’s small-press paperback ANCESTOR shocked the world by hitting #1 on Amazon’s SciFi and Horror charts, and was the #2 fiction novel overall only behind a Harry Potter novel. It thereafter and hitherto became associated with Scott’s constant campaign to take over the world, destroy the publishing industry, and kill all of you. Scott’s hardcover debut, INFECTED, was released on April 1, 2008. Every April 1, he tries to release something girthy and juicy.

This global holiday is recognized by the United Nations as a “Super-Important Cultural Day Thingee” and is valid as an excuse to skip work everywhere.

This week’s Friday Fix is a hybrid — it’s also about one of our advertisers. We’ve recently started using Transporter private cloud storage as our primary storage for all the audiobooks, podcasts and video that Scott’s created over the last nine years.

Scott and I chat about the pros and cons for us, and some early pitfalls Scott experienced in trying to back up 800gb of data. (That, my friends, is officially a lot of data.)

We’ve had a handful of questions from some of our creative friends, so thought it would just be easiest to share our experiences here. If you’re looking for private, secure data storage that’s easy to use and not subscription based, take fifteen minutes and listen!

Visit filetransporterstore.com to learn more, and if you buy, use the coupon code SCOTT to save 10%.

The Prawatt Jihad strikes terror into the hearts of sentients all over the galaxy. This race of intelligent, self-replicating machines is shrouded in fear, mystery and mistrust, yet at the center of it all is the “living god” known as Petra Prawatt — a human girl. What is her story? How did she become the focal point of the galaxy’s most-populous — and most-warlike — race?

Find out in “Complex God,” a novelette in the anthology ROBOT UPRISINGS, due out April 8, 2014 (but them pre-order links be below, Jack). Edited by scifi anthology legend John Joseph Adams and ROBOPOCALYPSE author Daniel H. Wilson, this book brings together some serious world-destroying talent.

Humans beware. As the robotic revolution continues to creep into our lives, it brings with it an impending sense of doom. What horrifying scenarios might unfold if our technology were to go awry? From self-aware robotic toys to intelligent machines violently malfunctioning, this anthology brings to life the half-formed questions and fears we all have about the increasing presence of robots in our lives. With contributions from a mix of bestselling, award-winning, and up-and-coming writers, and including a rare story by “the father of artificial intelligence,” Dr. John McCarthy, Robot Uprisings meticulously describes the exhilarating and terrifying near-future in which humans can only survive by being cleverer than the rebellious machines they have created.

It’s Black Friday, or as we like to call it around the Empty Set Lair … Orange and Black Friday. Gooooooo KRAKENS!  We celebrate our home-team fervor by:

I don’t know what the hell Scott Zoolander is doing here, but he seems quite into it.

But wait, there’s more! Even if you already have all our books and t-shirts, go check out the store anyway.  We’ve now got links to the killer Krakens jerseys and the sweet sweet Siglerverse Surlies.

And if none of that interests you, at the very least go check out our new store to see the t-shirt gallery, chock full of fun pictures of Scott doing his best Derek Zoolander impression. Oh, he wants to be an international male model, all right, and does so with his usual zeal for everything. I think it’s pretty fun.

The Orange and Black Friday sale extends through the weekend and ends Sunday night. Remember: 50% off THE STARTER hardcover and 25% off the rest of our physical inventory!

We’ve never had a storewide sale before, so get while the getting is good and enjoy our new store!

Good news Junkies, the PANDEMIC tour is booked!

We’ve got the tour dates for the PANDEMIC University Tour to promote Scott’s next novel, the conclusion to the INFECTED trilogy.

Now, I know many of you will be sad to see that your town isn’t listed, and while I can appreciate that, I can’t do anything about it.  There are three factors that determine the tour route, all reasonably equally important.

  1. Scott’s paying for this whole tour out of his own pocket, so that Crown can focus the marketing monies elsewhere to make PANDEMIC sing. So, the tour route had to be cost effective.
  2. Second factor is time. The impact of first week of sales is most essential, so a week long tour is potentially beneficial. More than a week? When we consider the increased costs and the extra time away from writing against the diminishing return on that investment, it doesn’t make sense.
  3. And last, there’s interest.  We were open to pretty much anywhere in North America (see #1) and considered all bookstores that responded to Crown’s query. There were some that asked for a stop but we couldn’t make the logistics work (see #2). But overall, there are fewer bookstores around, and therefore fewer available option, and lots of stores were already booked. We’ve done a non-bookstore based tour before with the ROOKIE Tailgate Tour, but that wasn’t an option this time.

So, if Scott’s not coming to your town, maybe you can make it out to see him if he’s close. If not, we’ll be doing a virtual tour stop the week before the book comes out with BookTalk Nation.

We’ve been having a lively discussion in the comments section of the first episode of NOCTURNAL and I thought I’d bring part of that out into the light a little bit more. Since the first guest voice on the BONES ARE WHITE podcast appeared earlier this year, we’ve received lots of feedback on the idea of other readers reading Scott’s work. Some great feedback, some solid support, some wistfulness, and even some entitled “you should remember where you came from” types of responses which, I’ll admit, simply baffle me.

We wrestled with the idea of anyone else reading Scott’s work for a very long time. Some of the reasons that get mentioned frequently: everyone’s come to know and love the ‘cast because it’s Scott; no one knows the characters like Scott does; Scott loves to do the reading himself; or the simple and succinct “it’s just not the same.”

The bottom line for us is that Scott has more stories in his bald head than he can ever get on paper. And for every book he records, that’s fifty to sixty hours of recording time during which he is not writing. Now you might think one week of work isn’t that big of a deal, and you’d be right — if it wasn’t for the fact that Scott is under writing deadlines from Crown, our own writing deadlines, our own editing deadlines, and handling the advertising that is a solid source of revenue for our family. Oh, and also having a life.

We decided Scott would continue read the Galactic Football League novels since they’re our flagship property. He’s already recorded four books (and is re-recording THE ROOKIE for a YA audience, a project he’s been trying to finish for over two years — did I mention lots of deadlines?), so keeping him on the GFL series preserves series continuity. It also makes the Junkies happy, and could anyone else really do the Tweedy brothers?

Ah, the good-old days of the long-ago time. Scott on the mic recording ANCESTOR in studio.

But outside of the GFL books, NOCTURNAL sat there, finished and ready to record, for over a year. We just couldn’t get to it, and there was no way we could get to it and get GFL V written so it would be out in 2014. With PANDEMIC coming up, we knew we were facing the same situation. So, we ultimately we decided it was better to have the audiobook/podcast available with a different reader, than simply never release an audiobook/podcast again.

That’s right: the decision isn’t if Scott should read his own books or not: Scott no longer has the time to read all his own books and maintain a viable business. We need to pay the bills and try to build a business and have a life. And just like y’all, we only have 24 hours in a day.

So we set out to find a new voice of Siglerism, and we found Phil Gigante.

We love Phil and his engineer Cory. They’re responsive, they’re funny, they’re invested, and they’re fans of the work. They ask questions and make suggestions and work hand-in-hand with Scott to make the work the best possible product. They’re perfectionists who deliver a high-quality product. They are our people, and working with them feels like home. We desperately hope this is the start of a long and fruitful relationship.

The choice for audio: experience Pierre with Phil’s voice, or get no Pierre. No Pierre for you!

But let me circle back once more for clarity: The choice is not between Scott reading or Phil reading. It’s a choice between Phil reading or no audiobook at all.

Think about it — NOCTURNAL is just now coming out in audio, more than a year and a half after the print versions. And the only reason it’s coming out now is that Phil performed it. If we had to wait for Scott, I don’t think it would ever filter up to the top of the to-do list.

At this moment, even with Phil taking the work of reading NOCTURNAL off Scott’s schedule, Scott has two full length novels pending completion of a production quality draft (GFL Book Vand FLIER). He’s got three co-written novellas (THE RIDERTHE GANGSTERand THE REEF) waiting for his part of the writing so that they can go into production. And, of course, there’s also endless requests for more CRYPT, more KISSYMAN, the EARTHCORE re-write, MT. FITZROYDESCENDANT, more HUNTER HUNTERSON & SONS, and even new requests for more Rabbi and Big Ugly. And so on.

Every one of those properties I listed in the paragraph above would come before any audiobook recording, simply because more properties in the store makes for a more viable business. Not more delivery options for each property, but more properties.

We know not everyone will care for the switch. This is not a business where pleasing everyone is a sustainable model. We know folks have fond memories of Scott’s character voices, and I know all of you will miss his female voices especially. That said, while Scott would like to read all his books himself forever, it’s simply not a viable option.

If it’s not an option, we think it’s better to have Phil reading than no audiobook at all.

This is one of Scott’s favorite stories. “Bag Man” examines the concept of “judge not, lest ye yourself be judged” from the perspective of the media vultures that celebrate and profit from death and misery. The second installment of our non-Siglerverse tale featuring the voice work of Justin Robert Young (@JustinRYoung on the Twitters).

In the first episode, the Rabbi and Big Ugly were supposed to find the President and bring his money back to Chad LaTilton, only before our heroes could complete this task, the President wound up dead. Now Rabbi and Big Ugly are on the hook for that cash — they have to find a lady named “Carnie” who might have a clue as to the money’s wherabouts. Listen in for more lubesters, violence, a few shots of Sea Breeze and some Pomeranian poop.

A new story and a rare foray into scifi/noir/comedy. Join Rabbi and Big Ugly as they stumble into quite a bit of trouble up on New Hoboken Station. Just hope you don’t wind up with a pile of pomeranian poo on your forehead.

Voice talent for this story is Justin Robert Young, co-host of the amazing NSFW show along with Brian Brushwood. This is a very funny show, y’all should check it out.

Yes, this is an audio post to invite y’all to visit the Flickr photoset of all the Siglerverse tattoos to date! I’m crazy like that.

I love my empty set tattoo: it’s geeky and scientific on it’s own, but also personally very meaningful and important to me. As the best tattoos are.

Which is why folks that choose the Siglerverse as the starting place for their body art are super cool in our book. Scott’s always blown away by someone loving something in one of the stories enough to permanently ink it on themselves.

How cool is it? It’s one surefire way to get yourself written into a Sigler story. That’s right: you get inked with something Siglerverse related, Scott will write you into the Siglerverse. Boom.

Anyhow, click on through and take a look at the cool art on cool folks. If you’re inked yourself and not in the gallery, drop me a note at media@scottsigler.com so we can sort that out.

Enjoy, Junkies!

Stop the presses! We’re doing something new this episode, and that is using voice talent other than Scott to bring you your weekly story. This is a story many of you have heard before, but re-written to prepare it for the BONES ARE WHITE collection. The voice talent is Alec Volz, a very cool cat with a very cool voice. He’s also a fan who loves NOCTURNAL, so he clearly has skill and great taste.

THE MVP is in our rear-view mirror, and now it’s time for a brand-new podcast title. Here it is, folks, the free serialization of our short story collection BONES ARE WHITE. The eBook is available for purchase, but you’re getting the podcast even before the audiobook is in stores.

Our first episode features the first new Kissyman audio story in over three years. It’s a short-but-sweet tale of Kissyman’s tender side. Sometimes a hard man is good to find — when that hard man finds you, not so much.

The short version: All existing preorders for THE ALL-PRO and THE MVP will be cancelled any minute now because we’re switching distributors. A new preorder for each book will be up in the next couple of weeks. I’m sorry about the extra work, and do hope you’ll come back and preorder again! The silver lining here that the books will come out a month sooner, on September 3, 2013.

The long version: Back in 2011 we partnered with Diversion Books, a publisher, and Perseus, a distributor, to put THE ROOKIE and THE STARTER into stores all over the US and Canada. We did a bunch of number crunching and soul searching, then decided we could manage printing 3,000 copies of each title. Then Perseus’ sales team got reallllllllllly excited about the books, and by the time we went to print, we’d agreed to print 10,000 copies of each. We’d print a ton, Perseus would do co-ops to get the books on the front-of-store tables, cover-out at airport bookstores, and we’d be The Next Big Thing. We reasoned that, out of all of us, we knew the least about distribution, therefore we’d take the advice of the pros and soon cash in all them monies.

And then … nothing like that happened. We printed the 10,000 books, and everything else fell flat. No co-op (for reasons we still don’t understand), no airports, no marketing. And no Next Big Thing, of course. We sold okay, but not for an initial print run of 10,000 books. (Sadly, had we stuck with our initial projections, we’d have done GREAT and be getting ready for our second print run.)

It’s been rough. Scott and I hate to lose, and hate to give everything we’ve got and have that not make a damn bit of difference. And that’s exactly what happened here. But, we are also people who don’t much cry over spilt milk. It is what it is, and it’s time to move onward and upward.

To that end, we’re changing distributors. Perseus will ship the remaining inventory for THE ROOKIE and THE STARTER to our new distributor, and we’ll start fresh with THE ALL-PRO and THE MVP. Because the ISBN for a book is tethered to the distributor, we’ll lose all the preorders when that ISBN effectively goes away.

As ever, we’re moving forward and working harder to bring you guys the best stuff we can.

There was voting, and ballot stuffing, and lots of awesome design suggestions, and some fine tuning tweaks, all leading up to the t-shirts now available for sale!

First things first: last week when I posted the two “Keep Calm and Run the Plays that I Call” options, I neglected to credit Belladonna420 with the cool idea. An oversight on my part I’m correcting now — THANKS BELLA!

As for the “Keep Calm” version voting, the black T won hands-down. We’re going to stock that version in our store. However, I’m making the orange version available for special order for the next three weeks only, until May 17th. You want an orange one? Don’t delay, order today!

And the end result of all this work? New T-shirt designs now available in the store! We decided on four new teams: Isis Ice Storm, Buddha City Elite, Sheb Stalkers and Yall Criminals. (That’s in addition to the Keep Calm Hokor tribute tee, because that’s how we roll.)

Here they are, all designed by Scott “Big Fish” Pond.

Your friendly neighborhood FDØ here, Junkies. If there’s one question ARealGirl and I get at every con, it’s “how do I get an ‘A’?”

In case you don’t know A Kovacs, she’s the human superpower that keeps the Dark Øverlord machine going. While I toil at the keyboard and the mic creating stories, she’s the person making sure we have a schedule, managing the book-design and book-printing process, managing our contractors, managing inventory of our books and making sure the books get to you, managing our files in the Kindle and eBook stores, etc., on and on, and so on and so on, in perpetuity, amen.

People see what we have, see how Kovacs enables me to make more and better stuff, and they say the magic words: “How do I get an ‘A’?”

We recorded this episode to answer that question. The short answer? It ain’t cheap, it ain’t easy, and it ain’t free. Most people don’t understand that A doesn’t “work for me,” we are a partnership. We tell you how our business came to be, what our roles are, and how creatives can find someone like her.

PS: You can’t have my “A.” Do not attempt to steal her away. You will fail.

Author’s Note: I’m posting this while watching the news of the Sandy Hook massacre in Connecticut. Our heart goes out to anyone and everyone affected by this tragedy. We don’t do much in the way of political or current-events blogging on this site, but doing something as normal as posting our weekly content seems somehow disrespectful at a time like this. Events of this nature remind me to say “thank you” to the people who make life worth living, so it seems an ideal time to say “thank you” to A Kovacs, a.k.a. the Director of Døøm, a.k.a. ARealGirl.

Junkies, if you’ve got kids, give them a hug from the FDØ and from A.

My buddy A.J. Colucci wrote this kick-ass horror/thriller called THE COLONY. I’ve been blabbing about it on the Twitters and the Facebooks for awhile now, and the book came out Tuesday.

I’ve never met A.J. in person. I only know her through this novel, which my agent, Byrd Leavell, asked me to blurb. I fell in love with the book, probably because it has a similar structure to my stuff, and you all already know what narcissist I am. I also saw a couple of things in the book that needed tweaks. Plot-structure stuff, mostly, because her science was spot-on. Stuff that it’s crazy-easy for an author to miss when he or she is heads-down for years, looking at each word and sometimes missing the bigger picture.

For my work, A Kovacs catches these problems in second-draft form (as does Big John Vizcarra, Jeremy Ellis, Joe Albietz, Tom Merritt, J.P. Harvey, Chris Grall and more). Trust me, when you are writting a novel-length thriller, where hundreds of plot threads have to line up in a “real world” fashion, it’s very easy to miss a thing or two.

A.J. impressed me because she was very excited to get this feedback. Some authors will get their feathers ruffled and be offended. In my opinion, these authors are more worried about themselves than the reader. Not, A.J., though — as we went back and forth, I heard over and over again phrases akin to “oh, that would have so annoyed the reader.” She is out to create the best product possible, because she wants people to get their money’s worth.

You need to understand that when I received THE COLONY to review, it was basically finished. A.J. had to work hard to make final changes, because publishers do not like changes at that point. She also worked with Chris Grall, who does some of my military and weapons consulting, to smooth out some issues with guns (yeah, just like me, A.J. lives at the range and knows everything about firearms … it’s just what we writers do).

I was pretty impressed with how A.J. doubled-down to fix these small issues and make the best story possible. On top of that, it’s a kick-ass book. If you liked my novella EUSOCIAL NETWORKING, you will eat this one up with a spork.

So in A.J., I think I found a kindred spirit: an author who cares about you the reader first, and everything else second. That’s why I consider her a buddy, even though we’ve never met in person. That, and she send me a bottle of Macallan’s as a lil’ thank-you gift. I’m easily swayed by the single malt.

AMAZON BANS REVIEW!
I did the video above as an Amazon review, so it would appear on the page for THE COLONY. Guess what we found out? Amazon bans book reviews by other authors! I’m not the first to discover this; the awesome Joe Konrath blogged about it here.

Konrath (pictured at right) is far more active in prosthelytizing the indie eBook world than I, and also knows more about the publishing biz. If you’re curious why Amazon would ban authors — people who might know a thing or two about what makes a book “good” — than read his post. He kind of sums it up here:

The fact that a binder can get a thousand fake reviews because of Romney’s comment, but I can’t honestly review one of my peers because I’m an author, is a bit silly, don’t you think? Amazon allows 1 star reviews from people who haven’t even read the book, but deletes positive reviews from people who honestly enjoyed it, and somehow that’s improving your review system?

That’s some of the frustration I feel as an author. I do have a parade of douchebags, people who haven’t actually read the book, giving me bad reviews because of some political statement I made, or because they don’t like my slightly over-the-top, bloated-ego-boasting on the podcast (keep in mind, I also get plenty of one-star reviews from people who didread it, and just think I suck, which is fine), or people giving me one-star reviews because they didnt like the eBook formatting, or even people giving me one-star reviews because they don’t like the PRICE of the book. Yeah, that happens.

So those uninformed, misguided or even downright malicious reviews can stay, but reviews from authors are banned. Awesome.

Amazon did this, I believe, because some authors would organize two kinds of campaigns:

  1. A “review circle,” where 10-15 authors review each other’s books in order to stack a ton of 5-star reviews in quick succession. This is common practive in the business and self-help book fields.
  2. Attack reviews, where an author (and/or his or her buddies) would try to sabotage a book that was in the same category but doing better by posting a crap-ton of one-star reviews.

Those are real problems that Amazon has to deal with. I can see the flat-out banning of author reviews solves these problems, but it’s throwing the baby out with the bath water. Authors spend their entire careers learning what makes a good story, and an honest review from an author is a great way for potential readers to know if they would or wrould not like a particular title.

So, imma go back to writing. What are your thoughts on this Amazon banning of author reviews?

Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz are hot stuff in the world of genre movies. The pair wrote the screenplays for THOR and X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, as well as having written for the shows FRINGE, ANDROMEDA and the TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES.

Scott interviews these delightful chaps about their new YA novel COLIN FISCHER. The conversation also delves into the subtleties of writing fiction as opposed to writing screenplays, and what it’s like to be the sole focal point of a book marketing campaign as opposed to being one of many faces when it comes to promoting a movie.

And wait … what’s this? Do we break some major news on their next scifi project? Why, yes … yes they do. You want to hear that part, especially if you hate bugs.

Hi, Junkies, ARealGirl here to announce another new Dark Øverlord product.

Finally! THE DETECTIVE is the second GFL novella, and it is now available in all formats for all eReaders by clicking right here (Kindle and Nook included). Just $3.99, this story covers Frederico Esteban Guissepe Gonzaga’s search for the family of Quentin Barnes. We’ve posted it at Amazon.com for Kindle, Barnes & Noble for Nook (but we have no control over when they process the book for sale — we’ve done our part, now we just have to wait until it’s available there).

Matt Wallace teamed up with Scott to pen this two-fisted tale that takes us to Micovi, Ionath City and even to the Jupiter Net Colony in the Planetary Union.

While this one is still YA (young adult), it’s a violent tale that takes on some very adult themes. Fred’s history is heart-wrenching. I love what Matt and Scott did to bring this character to life.

In the GFL timeline, this novella takes place during THE STARTER and THE ALL-PRO. You’ll see mostly brand-new stuff, as well as some familiar scenes told from a different point of view. I may be biased, but I think THE DETECTIVE is a little bit of storytelling magic.

Those of you who attended the East Coast (THE MVP) and West Coast (NOCTURNAL) tours get this eBook for free! If you attended one of those stops and haven’t received a download link yet, watch the video posted above and then send an email to media@scottsigler.com, saying what tour stop you attended.

In honor of the start of the NFL season, we not only have THE MVP landing on your doorsteps, but also we present a football-centric favorite among the Junkies, the short story “Number One With A Bullet.”

If you’ve never heard of the pitter Patterson of little feet before, we think you’re in for a treat.

ARealGirl and the FDØ recently did a “Books & Beer” vidcast to discuss the realities of being an author in the digital age. Crack open a brew, watch, and enjoy. Also, Evo and Jeff from Books & Beer are trying to lock up a pair of panels at South by Southwest (SXSW). Give ’em some Junkie love by taking two minutes to click here, read what they want you to do, and then voting. And, yeah, Evo is the man behind Podiobooks.com, which gives you all of Scott’s stories for free, so we’d love to help him out.

And here’s a little video I did to put in the feed so subscribers would know the Books & Beer interview was here (it’s too long to put in the feed, would keeeeeel your bandwidth). It’s me packing for Dragon*Con! It’s funny! Maybe!

Wave that checkered flag! Here it is, Junkies, the final vid of our wee little documentary of packing your copies of THE MVP. The Post Office trucks came today to snag your books, so as of about 10am Pacific Time on August 27, 2012, the book missiles are in the air! There are a ton of Junkies in this vid, so check out some of your peeps. Also, Scott yells at a person. He is a meanie.

Nature abhors a vacuum. Still.

This is part two, wrapping up the story started last week.

Also doing some final wrap-up work today on Shipping Hell Week for THE MVP. Although, it’s not really a week anymore. And with two dozen or more Junkies coming to help … not really hellish either.

ARealGirl and the FDØ knocked out one pallet of books as they kick off Day 1 of Hell Week. Three more pallets to go. That’s just unboxing, signing, numbering and stacking, folks — still have to do personalization.

Junkie Volunteers show up on Day 3. We are looking forward to it! However, don’t count on “Hell Week: The Musical” to be finished in time to regail them with the dulcet tones of Scott “Cabaret” Sigler.

Nature abhors a vacuum. I love this phrase (despite the fact that is is a personification of an abstract concept — there is no “Gaia,” I tell you). But where there are available resources, there is often life, and cities are teeming with available resources. They are also rife with shelter from the elements and places to hide, if an animal is smart enough to use them.

This is one of my favorite stories. I first podcast this back in 2007 for the Dawn & Drew show, one of the first podcasts to develop a big audience. Also, they both rock.

Like most of the stories in the BLOOD IS RED collection, I gave “Snipe Hunt” a solid edit. I wrote the story over ten years ago, so I want to brush up the polish brought on my by more-developed writing skillz.

This is a long-time Junkie favorite, and I hope you enjoy it.

Hi Junkies, it’s A here this week, picking my favorite Sigler story to share for Sunday content. I know y’all have likely heard this story in one of it’s earlier iteration on this site. It’s been around a while, and was part of the original Bloodcast, Season 1.

Even so, I think it’s worth another listen. Rewritten for BLOOD IS RED, re-recorded as well, it shines even more as a sad cautionary tale.

Hunter Hunterson and his son Bo are thrown into a heated conflict with a demon Oni, a man that is either a white-haired sorcerer or an aging Grateful Dead fan (or possibly both), and a meth-addicted, bail-skipping vampire (who just happened to be a high school basketball teammate of Bo). Time to bust out the enchanted silver knuckles known as “Old Glory” and lay a whoopin’ down on the forces of evil.

Scott ran into author David Brin at ComicCon 2012, and David agreed to come on the show to talk about his new science fiction novel EXISTENCE. They talk about that and a whole lot more.

Brin has bagged the Hugo, the Nebula, the Locus and the Campbell awards, so in short he has totally whooped up on the field of science fiction.

Welcome to a rare FDØ foray into supernatural fiction. That’s right, ghosts and goblins and vamps and werewolves and what-not. We hope you dig it.

The full title of this story is “Hunter Hunterson & Sons: War Journal.” That, however, is a little long when you figure the headline is going to be “BLOOD IS RED Episode #2: Hunter Hunterson & Sons – War Journal (Part 1)”, so we trimmed it a little bit.

Why the long names? Because “Hunter Hunterson & Sons” is an ongoing series. You’ll hear much more about that in the “author’s notes” segment of the story, which will play at the end of Part II next week.

Yes, I know you guys want details on how to book your Las Vegas travel arrangements for SiglerFest. Yes, I know you’re anxious to start planning your glorious trip. Trust me, I want you guys to climb on-board the SiglerFest train too — just give me a little bit more time to get things ready for you.

In the meantime, you can help shape the event by clicking here and filling out this survey for me.

A few things to note:
  • Information from folks who really think they might attend is the most useful. Everyone’s welcome to complete the survey, but it’s quite specific to likely attendees.
  • We plan to record the event for sharing here on the site at a later date. Live-streaming the event is unlikely due to hotel restrictions, but we’ll capture what we can and share as we’re able.
  • The hotel isn’t finalized as yet. We’re trying hard, but it’s still not quite done. We strongly advise you to wait until you hear official details in this feed before making any arrangements.
  • Current plan is for informal gathering on Thursday night for anyone who has already arrived, SiglerFest 2012 Friday and Saturday with informal evening things, and unstructured Sunday morning prior to departure.
  • Registration costs are not yet finalized, but will likely be ~$40 or so.

That’s it kids! Help me make a great event by completing the survey!

We’re thrilled to announce the creation of Dark Øverlord Paperbacks, an imprint of Diversion Books. Dark Overlord/Diversion will publish trade paperback versions of THE ROOKIE and THE STARTER, which are scheduled to hit stores on August 7, 2012.

And yeah, all-new covers. Bøøm. We’re wicked like that.

Take a listen to the short interview Scott and I did with Scott Waxman, Chairman and Co-founder of Diversion Books to learn all about this exciting news. The audio is a bit wonky in a couple of places, but we thought it was worth it to share the good news quickly.

This is one more step on our quest for world døminatiøn. The US and Canada will be the first to fall. All your bookstores are belong to us.

As Scott and I “grow up” in this publishing venture, we’re learning new things all the time. In November, when THE ROOKIE sold out, we learned that there are some folks who will wait until the last moment to pounce, and some folks who will be quite sad very quickly after the last moment that they waited too long.

Since I can help you now, but can’t help you once it’s gone, I’m doing what I can to say soon it will be too late, this is your chance, gogogogogo!!!

We’re bringing back the Goreline now that we’re in 2012 and on the new site! This one’s a bit of a catch up, so listen to get up-to-date.

One answer got a bit garbled. I blame Scott’s excitement over today’s trip to New Orleans. It’s regarding the choice of Sklorno names, and how they’re a throwback to Old Earth football-centric cities. (That’s what got garbled and cut out, so now you have all the info.)

Back with another GuestGoods, this time with artist, friend of DØM, and all-around good guy Len Peralta. Don’t know his work? Oh, you will shortly. And you can even grab some for yourself, just like us! (Check us out as Villian vs. Hero below!)

What is GuestGoods?
There are a ton of creative innovators out there, and we think it’s cool to share things that Junkies might dig. We’re approaching it from the “If you like Scott’s stuff, you might like this” perspective. We keep this show short! It’s a three-question interview show, and the questions are the same for everyone.

Questions are simple: 1) What’s your hot new thing? 2) What’s in it for the Junkies? 3) Where can they find out more?

From Len himself:
Thanks to Scott and A for giving me this platform to hawk my wares and basically pimp myself out. I never miss a chance.

A colleague of mine recently compared my approach to art to a “gunslinger”. I found that funny, beca use I have never heard that term in relation to a cartoonist before. As we chatted more, I got a better understanding of what he meant. He meant to say that I just run out there and take chances with my art. I don’t know if a project will end up working o r not, but in the end, it’s worth taking a chance rather than not doing the project at all.

This is especially true of my current art project “50 vs. 50”. As with Monster By Mail (my other original art project), I created it with a specific goal in mind – to get myself to San Diego Comic Con. (Monster By Mail was created to hel[img_assist|nid=5917|title=|desc=|link=none|align=right|width=195|height=250]p pay for heath care costs for the birth of my baby daughter). In the end, I drew 50 villains and 50 heroes and was able to make it to San Diego for the festivities.

Now, in time for Halloween, I’m drawing 50 zombies and 50 apocalyptic survivors for people. There isn’t any specific goal in mind this time around. It’s really just a fun way to celebrate one of my favorite holidays. Folks can order a digital version of the art, or for a few extra dollars, they can get a signed print or even the original pen and ink artwork of their zombie or survivor. All in all, it adheres to my tenant of making commissionable original art for people affordable and cool.

You can check out my heroes and villains gallery at http://www.the50vs50.com. And you can be the first zombie that shambles into the Zombie Gallery. (As of this writing, I haven’t drawn any zombies for this project, so the f ield is open.) You can also check out all my other projects (like my wildly popular nerdy trading card project “Geek A Week” and my avatar creation site Flipface) at my main website http://www.lenperalta.com.

A few weeks back we posted the “Cribs” tour of the Office of Døøm. The response was so good, I thought we’d try letting you “sit in” on one of our weekly Tuesday morning video teleconferences. This week we were scheduled to talk SiglerFest. As it sometimes goes with the FDO™, things did not unfold as I’d imagined they would. I will leave it to you to decide if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.

We’re just about sold out for SiglerFest, with fewer than 10 spaces remaining at the time of this posting. If you’re interested (and who wouldn’t be after Scott’s rousing Q & A above?) shake your booty over to the SiglerFest page and get in on this!

If you have a question for the FDO™, submit it as a video for the next installment! Make it about 30 seconds or less, .mp4 or .mov format, and send it along to me at ak@scottsigler.com

The gang of MTV (in this case, that’s “Miskatonic Television”) stopped by the Office of Døøm to scope out how the evil half lives. So many of you ask about the Future Dark Øverlord’s work environment, we thought a little tour was in order. Fair warning: watch out for the bomb-chikka-bomb-bomb music, ’cause that’s where the magic happens.

‘Twas the night before Dragon*Con, and all through the con, people were sleeping, dreaming dreams of Han. Well, no, actually, it was during Dragon*Con, and no one sleeps there. There were more than a few Han Solos, though.

At Dragon*Con 2010, Scott read his first monster story. “First,” as in, written for his fourth-grade class project. Several Junkies recorded this on their cell phones. We put the video together so we could give y’all a little FridayFix Christmas present. Enjoy!

We moved 25 copies in just over an hour, so they’re gone. Sad for those that missed, but happy for our donation to the Wounded Warrior Project. Sorry if you missed it, but we only have so many to offer.

We’re back with new Goreline calls! There’s so much info to be had in here Junkies! News about Scott’s 2011 Con attendance, news about Sigler*Fest (oh yes he did!) and much more. Oh, and he calls me a communist.

But my favorite part of this episode might just be the new song, Pandemic, by Separation of Sanity. Yep, a hard rockin’ metal song inspired by Scott’s INFECTED series. It rules. Check out the band here.

Have something to say to the FDO™? Call the Goreline (206-666-4673) with any crazy questions you like, and then come back here on Sunday for ANCESTOR Episode #29.

And in this corner, weighing in at a combined weight of 450 fighting pounds, Scott “The Future Dark Overlord” Sigler, and Matt “Mad Dog” Wallace, the tag-team champions of the world! Junkies, we’ve launched TITLE FIGHT as a free novella over at Podiobooks.com. We trimmed out all the jibber-jab and give you a straight left-jab of a story right in your frickin’ teeth.

This story is science fiction meets MMA (that’s “mixed martial arts” to you pacifist n00bs). It is part of the GFL-era storyline, and takes place between THE ROOKIE and THE STARTERClick here to download the video, or watch the embedded player above.

We’ve got hot, steamy fresh Goreline calls for you. The Junkies pile on with mockery of Scott’s Bible/Myth knowledge (or lack therof). We get some Siglerverse timeline info, a question about THE CRYPT, and some utterly random (and completely unecessary) mentions of JC Hutchins.

OTHER PODCASTERS MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE
• Mighty Mur Lafferty
• StrangerThings by Earl Newton
• SACRED COW short movie by Earl Newton, adapted from a story by your FDO™

Oh, my. This one’s hard to post, harder to believe, but here it is. Scott’s cousin Frankie made it to Dragon*Con 2010 late one night, and he invited me to sit in the hot seat. Even better, he asked the Design Diva of Døøm, Donna Mugavero, to be the “shot slut” for this episode.

I’ll be honest, it’s all a little fuzzy. But if you’ve ever wanted to know a little more about me, here’s your chance. Somewhere near the end I dropped my mic, so the sound quality there gets a little bit wonky, be forewarned.

A few notes:

  • If you’re interested in checking out Skepchick, click here.
  • For more information on the TDAP vaccine, and why it’s important, click here.
  • If you have any unanswered questions, about me or anything else, you can call the Goreline (206-666-4673) and we’ll try and get you your answers.
  • And last, although there does not seem to be footage of me showing off my winning dance moves, you can catch the FDO™’s interpretation of them here on YouTube.

As usual, this episode is not safe for work, but I do hope you like it as a kick-start to your weekend. Be sure to come back here on Sunday for the ANCESTOR Episode #22.

Please be warned -- this is not safe for work, this is not safe for your kids. This is basically a room full of people screaming foul language at the top of their lungs (and there is also some comedy in there, fo 'sho).

What we have here is an undiscovered gem from Dragon*Con 2009. Scott's cousin, Francis Dominick Olivieri (a.k.a., the other FDO). Interviewed Pablo Defendini and Amy Greco who, at the time, worked for the kick-ass scifi site Tor.com. While Pablo was brilliant under fire, I have to say keep your ears open for the one-liners from my girl Amy -- she more than held her own against the verbal-vomit assault that is Francis.

You know how Scott often says "if you're easily offended, turn it off now?" Yeah, this one is like that. Enjoy.

UPDATE!! Two more notes I forgot:  1) Mighty Mur Lafferty is the shot slut this time out, and she's fan-freakin'-tastic.  2) The unofficial third sponsor for this episode was the official author photographer for DØM (check out the cover boy at her site), Surly Amy of Surlyramics.com.

I believe it was Tolstoy who said, “I’m back in the saddle again.” Tolstoy or Tyler, I can’t remember which, but it matters not — what does matter is that the Goreline has returned. It’s been a long time since the Junkies heard their own mellifluous voice leak out of little speakers all over the world. These messages are a little old, but we’re going to catch up on everything we’ve got, and your FDO™’s snarky responses are fresh (and so clean!).

Want in on the action? Just call 206-666-4673 and leave a message (and yeah, I know Scott needs to change the greeting, been nagging him for months about that … not that I ever have to nag him).
